Unless you have been living down a mine you can’t have failed to notice the soaring temperatures this year around the state.
Queenslanders are hardy people when it comes to weather, but it has even got some of us heading for the hills! Driving at times this summer has been uncomfortable, especially for car owners that have neglected their air conditioning system.

Soaring Temperatures
According to a report in the Courier Mail on January 4th, south-east Queensland saw nine new temperature records set. Brisbane narrowly escaped a new record, unlike other parts from Darling Downs to the Sunshine Coast, where temperatures soared into the mid-40s.This caused a spate of emergency service call outs but thankfully no fatalities.
While the causes for these record highs can be debated, we have little choice but to live with the effects. But there are steps we can take to make life a little more comfortable.
You Thought That Was Hot?
You’ve probably noticed that, on a hot day, it seems even hotter in the car. This is no trick of the mind – it is hotter because of the “greenhouse effect”.
The inside of the car absorbs the heat of the sun it re-radiates throughout the car, heating up the air temperature. As the air is trapped, it means we need to turn the air-conditioning up another notch to control the temperature. That’s why you should never leave a child or pet alone in the car in this situation.
Diagnosing Problems
During hot weather like this, our cars’ air conditioning systems work overtime. Just like in our homes, this puts a lot of stress on the systems and, inevitably, they need servicing more regularly. Many car owners don’t even realise that their AC is not working at full capacity and must suffer the consequences while driving.
Problems commonly occur from coolant or refrigerant leaks, a noisy or malfunctioning compressor, a bad thermostat, problems with the blend doors, restrictions in the system, faulty electrics in the car (often from a weak car battery), or a build-up of bacteria.
How to Cool Down
To keep cool, car owners need to book in for regular air conditioning servicing, system flushing, re-gassing and leak/pressure testing, conducted by professional technicians. This will maintain optimal performance and extend the life of your vehicle’s air conditioning system.
