Your car battery is probably something you never think about until it goes dead and your car won’t start. That’s happened to all of us at some point.
So which car battery should you replace it with? Are some better than others? How can you choose the best car battery?
Like with most things we buy, there are differences between batteries and it helps to be fore-armed with a little basic knowledge.
Choosing your car battery
If you are looking to select your own car battery you need to consider the following factors:
- Size – this will depend on the size of the ‘battery tray’ in your car. Refer to the car’s manual to determine the exact size you need.
- Reserve capacity (RC) – this is a reflection of the power of your battery and refers to the number of minutes it can run the car for, should the alternator or fan belt fail: the higher the better but check the manual for recommendations.
- Brand – this may also be specified in the manufacturer’s manual, although another brand with the same specs should be fine.
- Age – your battery should be less than 6 months old. Check for date stamps on the case or label. A letter will indicate the month and a number for the year.
- Cold-cranking amps (CCA) – this is a measure of the battery’s ability to start the car from cold. In Brisbane our climate makes starting the car on cold mornings less of an issue!
Opting for the cheapest battery is very dangerous without first checking that it will match the required specs, as set down in the manufacturer’s manual. Don’t take chances or it could end up being a waste of money.
You also need to consider disposal of the old battery as it is not an item you can just leave for the garbage collectors. It is potentially toxic so you need to dispose of it responsibly. Take it to a recycling station or a specialist automotive supply store, where you may be able to get a small cash payment for it if you ask nicely!
